Turning a House into a Home
September 24, 2015 | Posted by: lhough

Many times we have clients approach us asking if we can create a room or scheme around a specific piece they have aquired. The piece can be an original painting from a recent trip, a collection of books, or unusual wall hangings. Either way, we strive to design the space so that it compliments our client’s pieces.

One client I have worked with purchased a rare fossilized palm frond measuring 4 feet by 4 feet. We designed the cabinets to hold and display the fossil as well as house the big screen television below. The surrounding shelves also display the client’s collection of fossils, pottery and handmade wooden bowls.

The fossilized palm frond is the focal point of the room.

Adding original artwork to a space or designing a room around a treasured collection turns a house into a home. Another client who is an avid reader, asked if I could turn her music room, with shelves overflowing in books, into a cozy reading nook for her family. We started by rearranging the bookshelves then added two comfortable club chairs flanking an end table. It made for the perfect spot to read or listen to her children practice playing the piano.

The newly rennovated reading nook and music room.
