Design Class 101 – Light Control
July 23, 2013 | Posted by: Linda Perrow

Light control. Good design is not only about how the room looks but how the room functions. One topic of concern is light control.

Last week while on vacation at the beach, there were discussions taking place under the tent of our fellow vacationer friends about which houses had the best kitchen, living space and bedrooms. The most popular discussion was on how much sunlight came through the windows in the bedrooms, therefore, affecting how late one could sleep! These days there are some awesome products available to help with light control. Roller shades, mesh shades, canvas shades and woven shades are now updated in look and practically.

OBJECT: To sleep later (or have the little children!) than sunrise.

SOLUTION: Use roller shades with blackout lining.

OBJECT: Limit glare (from the TV that folks must see on vacation!) and protect furnishings from the heat of the sun, but still see the view.

SOLUTION: Mesh Roller Shades

OBJECT: To be versatile – Diffuse sunlight, totally open, totally closed, pulled up (want to see who is coming to the house for a seafood dinner!).

SOLUTION: Wood or faux wood 2″ blinds

OBJECT: Add architectural with limited visibility (Closes a room to feel more cozy!).

SOLUTION: Plantation shutters

Remember consider light control, especially in bedrooms … and, sweet dreams!
