What’s In Your Linen Cabinet?

As designers, we are trained to know and apply any number of solutions for our clients. In fact, one of the purposes of our blog is to share some of these ideas, offering the public a glimpse of the way we approach many common problems – both decorative and practical.

Teamwork is essential to the renovation or construction process. We rely on architects, contractors and a variety of sub contractors to work together and help us ensure our clients needs are met.

But what about the client and what is their role? Some prefer to hire a cadre of experts, secure that they are in good hands, and happily enjoy watching the process. Others, armed with files of magazine photos (or an iPad full of Houzz photos), come to the table brimnming with enthusiam and ideas specific to their needs.

Storage and organization are in the forefront of many clients’ minds during this planning phase. This can be everything from counting kitchen drawers for hardware to adding up linear feet for closet space. Creative ways to maximize space can be a fun challenge. One client came to us with an idea to organize her large collection of jewelry. We took drawer glides and turned them vertically, creating pull out panels for instant visual access to her choices. It was such a success that I have re used her idea several times, always giving Cathy Rigg Monetti credit for her clever idea!

Combining Form and Function

As interior designers, our job (and our talent, I suppose), is to envision a space transformed.  With new construction the task becomes creating the space from scratch.  This is more than decorating.  Both renovation and new construction require our ability to draw upon our mental inventory of materials as well as knowledge of design elements, all coming together in our minds.  This is what we present to our clients.
