When my client approached me about renovating their basement, we had to make a few important decisions. What is the ultimate purpose of the room? Knowing what furniture would be used was the determining factor in their decision. My client wanted to incorporate their existing pool table, an antique pinball machine and one, possibly two, poker tables. The intended results: the Ultimate Man Cave – upgraded!
The contractor installed sheetrock on the walls and ceiling which were painted and added a stained wood ceiling over the seating group. A kitchenette was designed around an existing window to house a second television, sink, icemaker and bar for serving guests. Honed granite countertops, stainless appliances and painted cabinets gave the kitchen a relaxed yet updated look. The floors, originally concrete were scored and stained and a half bath was updated and enclosed for privacy.
A reclaimed pine barn door began the tone for the room. Warm browns for the stained concrete floors and neutral walls kept the basement bright since the only source of natural light was from one window in the space. A trace ceiling over the seating group was created and wood planks were stained and installed to tie in the finish on the barn door.
