What’s In Your Backyard?
March 19, 2013 | Posted by: Pam Plowden Rawson, ASID

This was my garage.  You know the kind.  The ones that have never held a car – only the junk that accumulates (and multiplies) over time.  Boxes of nothing important.  Poorly organized yard equipment and a variety of weekend warrior supplies.  Always daydreaming, always in search of another never-to-be-completed project, I would stare at the beamed ceiling, old brick walls, proximity to the patio and think…this space was way too cool to waste on paint cans.

And so, with the help of a trim carpenter, brick mason, imagination and some do-it-yourself weekends, the garage was transformed.  Cool in the summer and warm in the winter, this room is perfect to enjoy and to entertain friends and family year round.

The fireplace was inserted in the garage opening. Openings for ventilation were covered with custom iron grilles.

Storage closets were added. Windows and ceiling were existing.

Over the course of many weekends, I applied a stucco finish to distress the brick. I painted the concrete floor and found an old beam in Lexington, SC to create the mantle.
