How to Avoid a Decorating Emergency!

“Mom, I would like to bring several of my college friends home for the weekend.” Or your husband says, “I would like to invite a business collegue over to our house for a meal.” Or your daughter says, “Could I bring my boyfriend to our home to meet you?”

What A Difference Rearranging Makes

Before you get ready to purchase new furnishings or accessories, one thing to be sure of is that your your existing furniture is arranged correctly to begin with!

When we walked into this living room, it was evident that it was awkwardly arranged and crowded.  Traffic flow was difficult, and the seating was too spread out to be comfortable for a conversation.  By moving the piano to the left wall, it opened up the back wall for the conversation area and created a welcoming room.

A Collection of Memories

Before Chaos

About six months ago, my mother-in-law passed away after a brief illness. She was a good friend and a fellow designer. We shared a love for beautiful fabrics and furniture and often consulted each other on our various jobs. She was a well-known designer in New Orleans and loved the profession as much as I do.

My husband had the blessing of inheriting many of her beautiful pieces of furniture and accessories. So, my challenge was how to incorporate them all into our home. How many of you have had this challenge or will be facing it in the coming years? It can be daunting! Thankfully, I had several months to mentally plan how I would tackle this.
