Everywhere I go, but especially when I travel, I see things that inspire me – clothing, flowers, colors, buildings. I can’t help but notice them. It’s part of a designer’s mind that never turns off.
On a recent trip to Belgium, I was struck by how many old European architectural elements are still relevant for today’s homes.
Shutters
The use of a soft blue-green on exterior shutters gives distinction to an otherwise neutral palette, as shown on this restaurant in Brugge, Belgium.

Here in Lexington, South Carolina, I selected a similar color for shutters on this newly constructed home.
Doors
There are endless styles of antique doors. All of them make a unique first impression and many can easily be translated into current architecture.
Roof-lines
Have you ever noticed a crow-step gabled roof? Mostly found in ecclesiastical and governmental buildings in America, these roof-lines are everywhere in Belgium.
