The curved banquette and organic feel of the chandelier helped to soften the angles of the kitchen.

This Charleston kitchen was originally the house’s dining room.  Because of an existing  fireplace, not common in kitchens, the cabinetry had to be on the opposite wall.  Due to limited  wall space, a support kitchen was added as well.  The client wanted an eat-in area and liked the idea of the seating being in close proximity to the fireplace.  Because there was not enough depth between the island and the fireplace, we proposed attaching a banquette to the back of the island.  We designed an oval table to help navigate around the tight space and a small bench that remains under the table when not in use.  The pieces, as well as the cabinetry, were built by Meadors Construction.  Two tones of leather and nail head trim were used to add character and detail to the banquette and provide an old world feeling.

Facing the fireplace, the dining area creates an intimate space for eating in and entertaining close friends.

This picture from Traditinal Home was the inspiration for the master bath.

After selecting a contractor, we began meeting with the cabinet maker and the granite company. Selecting the granite was a challenge, knowing that the slab would not only run horizontally but also vertically. Cabinet details were drawn, lighting was selected and finishes determined.

Details of the custom cabinets, sconces, oval mirror and medicine cabinet are visible in these pictures.

Attention to detail was important when designing and building the custom cabinets. Capitol Cabinets’  kept the proportions of the two matching lavatories and dressing table in mind when designing the cabinets. We also added a linen cabinet in a small space that was originally planned to be part of the closet. The inset oval mirror was another important detail that the client loved from the magazine picture. After measuring multiple times, and several meetings with the contractor and granite installer, we decided to cut the granite first, then insert the oval mirror that was measured to fit. Electrical boxes for the two sconces were placed between the medicine cabinets and oval mirror before cutting the granite.Finally, the space came together with all the finishing touches.

One of the bedrooms did not have easy access to a bathroom for their overnight guests – not particularly convenient!  We worked with their architect, Glenn Keyes, and came up with the perfect idea to help solve this problem.  A “bath closet.”

Of course!

We started with an empty room.

A craftsman built the walls to house the new bath closet.

We only had the space to create a half bath, but this was a clever solution to make this guest bedroom more functional.

Necessity is always the catalyst for inventive design!

Now this client’s guests have a convenient and beautiful half bath.

TV cabinets can be converted for clothes storage or become a bar.

In the decades to come, we lost the bad furniture idea.  A television became, well, just a black or silver box, and it was something to be hidden.  Thus the popularity of the TV cabinet.  There wasn’t much worth watching in those days, so maybe pretending it didn’t exist was a good idea.  But as designers, we continued to focus our family room and sometimes the bedroom layouts to the location of the TV.  As the television got bigger, so did the cabinets.  If the room lacked interest or architecture, flanking bookcases could be added.  During those years, we also designed built ins (usually by the fireplace) that would hide the TV when not in use.  Designers have a reputation for not liking to see the TV, but we were really seeking a way to make an attractive feature out of an unattractive reality.  Televisions, deep and clunky, always seemed to dominate the room, no matter how lovely the cabinet.

Along came VCRs, DVRs, and more channels than we could ever watch.  Families could now choose how and when to gather around the television, not being bound to the networks’ schedule.  Media rooms, only affordable to a few, were not needed to enjoy a quality viewing experience.  Technology was changing the way we behave and designers, as always, must respond to those changes.

Wall-hung TVs work well over this style console or simply sit on top.

And finally, the flat screen TV has become mainstream and your old television is as useful as you VHS tape collection.  The information age, technology and the internet have been the biggest game changers of all.  Televisions are now out, hanging on the wall or simply sitting on TV consoles.  Suddenly, the TV cabinet could feel as useless as the old TV itself.  And so, the technology continues to drive our behavior.  Even better screen quality, upgraded sound equipment and the ability to monitor your cable schedule from your iPad or phone makes TV viewing more customized than ever before.  We can eliminate trash TV (please define that individually) and enjoy an obsessive  week of “Downton  Abbey”, “House of Cards”, or “Mad Men”.  With great viewing options available, movies released to video so quickly, and a Red Box on every corner, television watching once again can be great family entertainment.  Just remember what your mother said – turn it off sometimes and go out and play.

Draperies can help with light control,  add softness, decoration, warmth, and make a room feel more cozy. Just last week I installed or measured for three projects which involved adding window treatments to rooms.

Full length draperies add elegance to this dining room.

Draperies in this bedroom add height to an already high ceiling.

Always consider full length draperies in your design plan –  they make a huge difference in the feel of a room!

The use of a gorgeous mirror over a sideboard in a dining room, over a chest in a living room or master bedroom, or over a console table in a hall can be a perfect addition in making a room feel complete. Of course, the style of the mirror is very important in the concept of the design of the room.

We love this wonderful starburst mirror over a console table.

This sophisticated mirror consists of a scored, beveled mirror. The black and gold frame is very handsome.

The hexangonal Perlini mirror designed by Alexa Hampton, is a great accent mirror! The lightly antiqued glass within a soft gold frame adds to the character of the mirror.

We saw these large and small starburst mirrors displayed  in a grouping – too cool!

This mirror is an example of a clever use of carved lines on distressed cream painted wood, combined with a gray washed outer frame.

Love the geometric frame on this large, very decorative mirror!

Small Italian mirrored sconces are a great look for a narrow wall space.

Well, not quite.

Actually, it’s been a busy few days of spring cleaning here at Pulliam Morris and we’ve been working hard.  Here’s a little of what we’ve been doing.

The box truck got a shiny new coat of paint.

We have been cleaning up, picking up, and filing away!

The men perked up our planters with Plumbago, Verbena, Boxwood, Caladium, and Begonias.
