For the Record
April 16, 2015 | Posted by: Pam Plowden Rawson, ASID

“We had a leak! Do you have my ceiling color?”

“Do you have a paint sample from the dining room? I lost my swatch.”

Whether renovating, updating, or for disaster repair, I encourage my clients to keep good records of finishes for quick reference. (We keep a copy here, too-just in case!). Files. Binders-Whatever works best for you. But also consider this clever idea…

Our younger readers may not know, but before Pinterest and prison time, we all depended on Martha Stewart to shame us into turning the mundane into an art form. But many years ago I saw her actually do something that made perfect sense and did not require a staff. A rare combination, indeed.

Paint chips are actually photographs and not completely accurate. Good for record keeping-but not great for future touch ups. And there is no reason to keep nasty paint cans in the garage! While your contractor is painting, pick up some stirring sticks at the paint store. After deeply immersing in the paint and letting it dry, label by room and paint information. Drill a hole, get some twine, and hang somewhere out of the way-like the garage or storage closet. When touch ups are needed, take it to the paint store to get an accurate match!

Even a recovering perfectionist can’t argue with a practical and aesthetically pleasing solution.  I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it really is a good thing.
